At the table, Amy watched Jack walking away. She was filled with mirth and wanted to fill the now quiet, murmuring club with her laughter. Poor Diana! She was slurping up champagne like her life depended on it. Amy couldn’t wait until the police left so they could dance again. She wanted to shake and shimmy all her trouble and heartbreak away. This time, it seemed her movie-star boyfriend had returned to America for good. A cheap gossip rag had a double-page spread of him and his new co-star, who was also, apparently, his fiancée. That was the first she knew of it.

Amy watched Jack again. And then saw something awful.

Jack almost looked like he was going into a shimmy, but then he collapsed to the ground, still writhing and shaking, his head horrifically knocking on the hard floor. She leapt up and ran to him.

‘Move!’ she said to the police. ‘Jack?’ His eyes were rolled back in his head. ‘Can someone run to a telephone?’ she yelled.

‘We’ll take him to the hospital,’ one of the policemen said. She eyed them warily, but then accepted. Their motor car would get him there quicker than anything else.

‘I’ll come,’ she said.
